Vild med Djursland

Bird‑watching tour
with local ornithologists

There is a big difference between seeing a bird and spotting one. On this tour you look over a local ornithologist's shoulder – and learn to see what they see.

Djursland is some of the finest bird country Denmark has to offer. The coast, the salt meadows, the wet grasslands and the great forests lie side by side, giving a richness of species that is hard to match: the white-tailed eagle patrolling the coast, the cranes on the meadows, the birds of prey over the open fields and the songbirds at the forest edge. Every season has its own programme – the spring migration, the breeding season, the autumn migration and winter's visitors from the north.

The ornithologists know the places, the times and the sounds. Along the way you learn to identify the most common species by silhouette, flight and voice, to use binoculars properly – and how to move through bird country without disturbing. A spotting scope is brought along, so even the most distant visitors come up close.

The tour requires no experience – curiosity is enough. Bring binoculars if you have them; otherwise you can borrow a pair on the tour. Remember clothing suited to the weather and footwear that can handle wet meadows.

A little tip for the impatient: the best bird experiences often come in the first and last light of the day. Put on an extra layer, find a good spot to stand still – and let the birds come to you.
